Wren Nest mill fire
High Peak borough council has produced a report on its investigation into the fire at Wren Nest mill on Good Friday, April 6, 2007. Its findings are summarised here.

The summary suggests that, although the Building Control team issued Conditional Completion Certificates for 42 of the 72 apartments on September 1, 2006, the building had not had its final inspection and the developers, Oakapple Ltd, did not tell Building Control that 41 of the apartments were occupied. (Nor, it seems, did the Council Tax department.)

A sprinkler system was properly installed. "High Peak Borough Council is not aware that it had been switched off, in whole or in part." Some residents believe that the system had been turned off after a burst pipe flooded the apartments in February 2007.

Preferred route of the bypassThe public inquiry into the Longdendale bypass and Glossop spur road adjourned indefinitely "pending the publication of revised evidence by the Highways Agency and Tameside MBC" when it reopened on Tuesday, December 18.

The Highways Agency told the inspector chairing the Public Inquiry, John Watson, on Monday, March 10 that their revised evidence will not now be available until October 2008. Details here.

Stephen Greenhalgh, the Highways Agency's project leader for the bypass, was "moved on" in January and replaced by Alex Bywaters.

John Hall from Denton, one of the objectors to the bypass, has written to the inspector saying that the public inquiry is being held under "deliberate and knowingly false pretences and the Bypass objectives have been kept hidden by TMBC [Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council] Councillors and those within the administration, plus The Highways Agency, UK Government, and developers and speculators".

The hidden agenda, he says, is that Tameside is co-ordinating proposals for a North European Trade Axis - an "M62 mark 2". Details here.
