 History of The Society

Glossop Concert Society was formed in 1992 to promote programmes of classical music in the Glossop area, largely due to the efforts of the society's artistic director - Jeff Snowdon.

As well as the public concerts, the society has organised annual events involving all the local schools and other local organisations, including MENCAP and the PHAB Club, which has led to the regeneration of the Primary Schools Music Festival.

Over recent years the season has comprised four Saturday evening concerts and two Saturday morning Coffee Concerts. Whilst the emphasis has always been on a 'classical' theme, the society has tried to include in its programme concerts to appeal to a wide variety of taste.

A particularly popular concert to a younger audience some years was "Pachakuti" - Music & Culture of the Andes. To encourage the attendance of young people, the society has always had a policy of free entry for 'under 16s' for all concerts.
