JUNE DAVIES |
|
June
Davies (right) was born in South Manchester,
but now lives in Glossop, and uses her spare time giving
performances of humorous songs, anecdotes and poetry
in clubs, pubs etc. As sort of up-to-date Joyce Grenfell
without the jolly hockey sticks!
With
a fertile sense of fun and an eye (and ear) for the
ridiculous, June has, in recent years, made innumerable
club appearances as well as performing at Whitby Folk
Festival, Buxton Festival Fringe, Glossop Literary Festival
and Romiley Forum.
June
is a member of Glossop Operatic and
Dramatic Society (GODS), Partington
Theatre, High Peak Writers' Group and a local poetry
group. June's philosophy on life:
"You
have to see the humorous side of life.
If you don't, you go bonkers!"
"...her
songs and poems showed a witty view of life.. from
the thoughts of a castrated cat to a farewell to an
old and well loved car."
"Her
verses, songs and comments on life had everyone in
uproar."

LITTLE GEM BY GED BURNS |
|
"Glossop"
crossroads to trade routes ancient and new
'This little gem' nestling in a meandering river
surrounded by rolling hills of irreplaceable beauty
Whose moors kiss the horizon in waves of purple blue
heather
Browns of brackens, green of grass, changing
With time of day and weather crossing its hills, creating
A myriad of hues and colours to Mother Earth and Sky.
Lightning
flash, black threatening cloud, thunderous roar,
cold unyielding cruel. Nature's weather changing in
mood as a
Lover's quarrel its anger soon abated turning to love,
soft gentle as
The caress of Angel wings fluttering warmth and well
being
To all privileged to live in this gem shrouded in the
mists of
Ancient time and Long beyond.
This
unique little gem filled with hardworking folk, a place
To be proud of, full of history and pride where generations
Of Men and Women worked in cotton mills, families by
their side
Producing fine cotton goods with understandable pride,
along
with Farmers, Engineers, Foundry Men, Shop keepers,
Road sweepers and Banks all working closely together
in unified ranks.
So for the sake of our Children, whose future we hold
in the palm
Of our hands we the privileged occupiers of now, must
work
and plan, to hand over all this natural unspoiled beauty
to the
Tomorrow people, the Children of today.
