GLOSSOP HERITAGE CENTRE

Heritage Centre logo

Glossop Heritage Centre
Henry Street, Glossop

The Heritage Centre has been created by local enthusiasts drawn from the town's many voluntary organisations who wish to share the pleasures and interests of the town and surrounding countryside with a wider public.

Times of opening:

Mondays - Saturdays - 10.00am - 4.00pm

The Centre shows the way in which the town, its setting and its people have developed in the known ten thousand years of its history, so that both residents and visitors are encouraged to gain a better understanding of its unique character and tradition, which should in turn lead to a greater concern for its future.

There has been a community at Glossop for well over 1,000 years. On the outskirts of the town stand the remains of the Roman fort of Melandra. In the Domesday survey of England in 1086, Padfield, Hadfield, Dinting, Glossop, Whitfield, Chunal, Charlesworth and Chisworth are all mentioned.

In the Heritage Centre there is an Art Gallery and Craft Area where local artists and craftspeople can exhibit their work and offer it for sale.

Coach parties and school parties are always welcome and if informed beforehand, the Centre can organise conducted visits.

EXHIBITIONS

The permanent exhibition illustrates the area's past, from pre-history to the twentieth century, emphasising the strong influence on the town's economic and social structure made by the Dukes of Norfolk and the Victorian mill-owners.

Regularly changing exhibitions are also held, usually illustrating specific aspects of the town's development and local subjects of general interest - natural history, arts and crafts, sporting activities, schools and the influence of the railways.

Where are we?

Glossop is situated in the extreme west of Derbyshire surrounded by some of the most magnificent scenery of the Peak District and yet is only 14 miles from Manchester and 24 miles from Sheffield. The Peak National Park is on the doorstep, so Glossop is often known as "The Gateway to the Peak".
